Grasshoppers Room Report

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Lots happening in the Grasshoppers!

A large group of children have been showing an interest in writing and illustrating their own books. We have been reading a Roald Dahl book just before rest time, which was quite a shock to most at first – with there being no pictures!

We have also been making our eco pots, which will eventually be planted in the yard.

The Tuesday and Thursday group  were involved in our Timor-Leste donation. Staff and children spoke of East Timor schools and children, before the children had the chance to decorate a calico bag to be sent over to our sister school.

The home corner is abuzz with children coming up with the idea of making a house with a washing line, iron and wardrobe area.

The children have settled into their new rooms really well so far. There have been new routines to learn, such as getting the children to wash their own cups, and put on their own sunscreen. There’s been excitement and lots of discussion about (3-year-old) kinder as some of the Grasshoppers now attend on Thursday and/or Friday.
At the moment the children’s main interests are trains and train tracks, painting, drawing and pasting, the block corner and stories – both books and story-telling.

  • Many budding artists and scientists are filling the room. We are exploring the effect the sun has when reflected through objects of colour and crystals. Experimenting with bi-carb soda and vinegar after making our own volcano.
  • Kay has finalised her Overall responsibility duties and will complete the final few subjects next year to become a Level 4.
